It's a common perception that retirees and cashed-up baby boomers have been dominating the exodus to regional Australia for a "tree" or "sea" change in their post work lives.
But new research from the Regional Australia Institute and the Commonwealth Bank shows it's now millennials and gen-Xers who are leaving the big smoke to buy a home for a much lower price or to chase better job opportunities.
