Boris Johnson imposes UK windfall tax on oil & gas companies as households reel from surging prices

The surging cost of energy has sparked an extraordinary response from the British government to provide to relief from "bill shock" that's rocking households and businesses. 

Plans have been revealed to levy what's known as a "windall tax" on oil and gas companies which have been profiting from the war in Ukraine. 

However, Australia's new Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the UK windfall tax won't be copied in Australia.

"Bill shock" here to stay as regulator confirms energy price surge

Millions of Australian households and small businesses are set to be hit by further cost of living pressures with electricity bills tipped to soar. 

The Australian Energy Regulator has decided to pass on hefty increases to the benchmark power price as geopolitical forces more coal and gas more expensive.

Reality is quickly setting in for the new Treasurer Jim Chalmers as he confronts budget numbers that he quickly described as "dire". 

Just a few days into the job, Mr Chalmers warned the nation should brace for more bad news on debt and deficits - and skyrocketing power prices which will be confirmed later this morning.

Wall Street tech rout on way to tech wreck as sector smashed on recession fears; Snapchat owner SNAP plunges 43pc on dire profit warning

It's been another volatile session on Wall Street as investors continue to worry that aggressive interest rate rises could spark a global recession. 

Technology stocks have been hit the hardest after a dismal profit outlook saw Snapchat's owner Snap plunge a massive 43 percent. 

Fears of contagion in social media stocks sparked heavy falls in Twitter, Facebook's parent Meta and Google's parent Alphabet.

Racism common for indigenous workers, landmark employment survey shows

Australia's first indigenous employment index shows racism - both direct and unconcious - is common in the workplace for First Nations people.

The survey of 42 major employers conducted by Andrew Forrest's Mindaroo Foundation lifts the lid on indigenous employment practices and says many indigenous employees feel "culturally unsafe" at work where they often face discrimination, ridicule or denunciation.
