The rapid transition to renewables is gaining pace with the energy giant Origin announcing plans to close the nation's biggest coal fired power plant seven years of schedule.
Origin plans to replace the plant in the New South Wales Hunter Valley which new technology including a massive battery to pump baseload power into the grid.
At the same time, the New South Wales premier Matt Kean announced a separate plan to build the biggest battery in the southern hemisphere.
Energy Minister Angus Taylor says the move to close the Erararing plant in the NSW Hunter Valley is "bitterly disappointing" and creates a less reliable power grid.
