An investor showdown is on the cards for AGL later today with billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes on the brink of installing four independent directors to the energy giant's board.

The move is designed to accelerate AGL's move out of coal fired power into renewable energy and has the backing of major investors who want to see rapid change.
