With his first federal just coming up late next month, Treasurer Jim Chalmers is continuing to manage expecations that there'll be additional handouts to deal with the rising cost of living.
That's despite announcing he's landed a 50 billion dollar improvement in the budget bottom line as commodities continue to underwrite Australia's economy.
You'd think that would be good news - but it's not the full story.
Mr Chalmers says the budget faces big structural problems as he manages the expectations of the public and ministerial colleagues might be overly-optimistic.
