ACCC urges tighter curbs on gas exports as domestic crisis deepens.

The federal government is being urged to consider intervening in the energy market, amid concerns of a gas shortage that could lead to higher prices, according to the latest report by the consumer watchdog.

Recommendations from the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) could provide a trigger for the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism which would force exporters to hold back gas for local use. 

Grattan Institute energy program director Tony Wood says there's a case for a windfall profits tax to encourage gas producers to hold back enough gas for domestic use.
