The new Albanese government is under enormous pressure to intervene in the energy market to protect consumers from soaring gas and electricity prices.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has a measure available to preserve domestic gas supplies to keep prices down under the Australian Domestic Security Gas Mechanism but he's so far resisting calls to pull the trigger as a cold snap on the east coast pushes up demand.
