Revamped QR codes to send rapid COVID alerts in new normal workplace - Monday Finance with Peter Ryan

As the race towards 80 percent double vaccinations speeds up, employers are also racing to convince staff they can soon safely return from home to the workplace.

That means the QR code check-ins we all know will become a lot more common and potentially more complex - especially with the need for proof of vaccinations, vaccination passports and the growing use of rapid antigen tests.

Most companies already use workforce management programs for rosters and managing how employees are scheduled  - and  throughout the pandemic, they've also been using QR codes to trace who's been where and when.

But QR codes alone have their limitations because they can't trigger real time alerts about the COVID risks - which is why the tech company Nimbus has trialling updated systems with government departments and listed companies - where a COVID alert feature has been integrated into QR code check-ins.

Nimbus chief executive Grant Custance told me the ability to trigger immediate alerts and to do away with time lags will be the new normal when we finally get back to work.

I speak to Thomas Orito on ABC NewsRadio

Given the now commonplace use of QR codes where most of us are on automatic pilot, Grant Custance says you might be surprise to know that many companies still usual old school systems to track worker movements and potential risks

But with so much more data flowing into company systems - what about privacy concerns and potential breaches by police and intelligence agencies?

There are already significant privacy laws that now need to be balanced with workplace safety and an employer's duty of care - meaning it will be up to companies and government departments to work with health authorities while ensuring that all information gathered is used legally and ethically
