US payments giant Square plans to buy Afterpay, in a deal that values the Australian buy now, pay later firm at $39 billion.
If sealed, the deal would be the biggest merger and acquisition in Australian corporate history.
But ABC's Peter Ryan says the buy now pay now sector continues to worry consumer advocates who want it regulated as a credit product.
